Boulder King Soopers Table Mesa

Table Mesa King Soopers Store #33 in Boulder has been in operation for more than 30 years and is a favorite location and regular stop for local high school students on break, longtime neighbors, and people on their way to camp or ski in the Colorado mountains. In March 2021, this King Soopers was the unfortunate victim of an attack by a gunman. During this shooting, ten people were killed, the self-checkout was all but destroyed, the front windows were blown out, and armored police units cut through the ceiling and rammed through the front. This was a nightmare experience for King Soopers employees and the Boulder community. The store needed significant repairs before reopening. King Soopers made the decision to completely renovate and remodel the store to create a different scenery for their hard-working staff and faithful customers so they would not be reminded of the incident every time they stepped through the front doors. The entryway, the Starbucks, the ceilings, and the flowers are all new, bringing much needed light and hope to this community.
MYC, as a longtime general contractor and partner with Kroger, was alerted to the situation and was later contracted to assist with the rejuvenation project. MYC was honored to be the selected contractor to renovate the 65,935 SF interior and expand the exterior of the store by 2,631 SF. The main focal point of the project was the demolition and expansion of the front façade and parking lot. The interior received new finishes throughout and the floral prep, produce area, deli prep, mezzanine offices, and front end were reconfigured. Existing shelving, fixtures, and refrigerated cases were replaced and/or relocated throughout the store. The existing ceiling on the sales floor was removed along with existing ductwork, and all existing sales floor lighting was upgraded to LED fixtures. The store received two new egress exits, both with accessible ramps on the exterior. A third ramp was added at the rear of the store for egress and dock delivery usage. The parking spaces, drive aisles, landscaping, lighting, etc. in the front parking lot were reconfigured. The existing parking lot received a mill and overlay. The existing concrete around the rear of the building was repaired as necessary. There were multiple structural challenges to overcome along the façade grid-line K, due to existing conditions. There were also supply chain issues that the construction team had to overcome. Overall, MYC delivered a successful completed $6M project that can now be a spotlight to the South Boulder Neighborhood hosting families, friends, and neighbors as they return to the town square.
On February 9th, the store hosted a reopening ceremony beginning with a moment of silence for the ten people that were killed in the mass shooting. The ceremony was memorable, momentous, and brought on a flood of emotions. The program had a star-studded cast of King Soopers employees, first responders, wonderful speakers (including Governor Polis), and CU Boulder cheerleaders who lined up to welcome staff into their new home.
